Mrs. Erica Simmons is a sought-after public speaker on
innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence
(AI), STEM technology and the Future of Work. She gained much of her experience during a successful 25-year professional career in the enterprise software technology industry. A Jamaican by birth, she is considered an expert on the challenges and opportunities of integrating Artificial Intelligence in the Caribbean region, including understanding infrastructure, cultural, governmental ,and commercial challenges to integrating transformational technologies of the 4th and 5th industrial revolution.
In November 2024, UNESCO published the Caribbean AI Policy Roadmap, co-authored by Mrs. Simmons. This first-of-its-kind policy guidance document advocates for collective action, ethical considerations, and inclusive policymaking to harness the transformative potential of AI for the benefit of Caribbean societies. To support the adoption of key policies for the region, Mrs. Simmons participates in several global technology initiatives including being a member of the Expert Group for the implementation of UNESCO’s
Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, a member of UNESCO’s AI Ethics Experts Without Borders, a member of the UNESCO Information for All Programme (IFAP) working group on Information Accessibility, a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Planet Positive 2030 campaign, and past Chairwoman of IEEE, Jamaica.
